Padma
clay, Thai Gold Acrylic Lacquer · 2021
First sculptural work done for my IB thesis show in highschool. The theme was ‘Growth & Decay’, I was inspired by the lotus pond near my home in Thailand which would get ravaged by local water lil-aphids every few months. The cyclical nature of this death and rebirth was visualized through my ceramic recreation of the buddhist gesture known as Padma Mudra – symbolizing resilience and enlightenment. I intentionally withered the sculpture to juxtapose these affirmations with the flower’s eventual demise.
